Why old-school gaming is alive and well.
Today I had a lengthy session playing the upcoming Wii version of A Boy And His Blob. I’ll save my full preview for the magazine (it’ll be in issue 46, out 31 July) but in short, it’s looking fantastic.
Well, his face is on the cover!.
Tennis stars have to do a lot of autographs at Wimbledon but John McEnroe seemed particularly pleased to be signing the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine. Well, his face is on it!
Can it beat Grand Slam Tennis?.
There was a time, back in the days of the Sega Dreamcast, when Virtua Tennis was by far the greatest tennis series in the world. Things have changed over the years though, and with this debut Wii release it finds itself competing for ranking points with a handful of other impressive tennis titles. The likes of Top Spin 3 and the new EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis go for a more realistic experience while on the other side of the spectrum there’s Wii Sports, a game which will always have the upper hand because, simply put, everyone with a Wii already has it. So is Virtua Tennis good enough to justify buying it over the competition? Yes… as long as you have the Wii MotionPlus attachment.

Fact: there have been seven copies of Mario & Sonic sold for every Wii in the UK. Okay, that’s not exactly a fact but sometimes we wonder. The game has pretty much been a regular feature in the top 20 all-format game charts since its release a year and a half ago and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide (as well as over 4.5 million copies on DS). It’s a shame there can’t be a sequel any time soon, what with the next Olympics in 2012… hang on a minute though. Aren’t the Winter Olympics next year? Bosh!

Alive is already on the Rock Band 2 set list but you’ll be able to download more songs by the Seattle band when the game is released on Friday.

Rock Band Or Guitar Hero?.
Ever since Rock Band turned up on the scene laden down with a shiny bunch of new instruments, gaming has had its very own battle of the bands. We were looking forward to seeing if Harmonix could rip the rhythm action crown away from Guitar Hero when Rock Band was released on Wii last year but as it turned out there was no contest.
