Until recently, gaming on Christmas Day has usually been a solitary affair: I receive the game or console of my choice, I disappear for a few hours to my room, join in on the Christmas dinner, then disappear again.

Okay, you’re getting closer to discovering our top ten games of the decade. All our selections are great games but as we enter the teens, the big guns start coming out and Zelda, Mario and Metroid begin to dominate. On the couch with a Nintendo legend…
"You’ll have to wait a minute - he’s just drawing at the moment", a Nintendo PR lady kindly informs us as we wait anxiously to interview one of videogaming’s genuine superstars. Five minutes later, a Nintendo of Europe executive emerges with a signed sketch of a group of Pikmin, grinning broadly. Shigeru Miyamoto provokes that kind of giddy, childlike response even among seasoned professionals. It’s not often you get the opportunity to sit down and enjoy a conversation with a true games industry legend, but back in November we were lucky enough to be granted an exclusive audience with Shigeru Miyamoto himself.

Kensuke Tanabe takes us through the development of three classics.
In 2000, the newly created Retro Studios scrapped production on their three debut titles and threw its weight behind something big, bold and controversial. Having never released a game, Nintendo had handed the fledgling company the keys to the Metroid series.
What games were under your Christmas tree?.
So, how was Christmas Day for you? Bellies full of turkey? Or maybe you plumped for a nice roast goose perhaps? Or a crumbly nut roast for the veggies? Personally, we went for a rather tasty ham this year, with some kind of sweet, crispy glaze.
